In Germany, there are different categories of driving license, each covering different types of vehicles. Here is a detailed overview of the individual classes and their specific requirements.

Driving license class AM

  • vehicles: Light two-wheeled motor vehicles (L1e-B), three-wheeled mopeds (L2e), light quadricycles (L6e)
  • Minimum age: 16 years
  • Included classes: No

Driving license class A1

  • vehicles: Motorcycles (up to 125 cm³, max. 11 kW), three-wheeled motor vehicles (up to 15 kW)
  • Minimum age: 16 years

Driving license class A2

  • vehicles: Motorcycles (max. 35 kW, power/weight ratio max. 0.2 kW/kg)
  • Minimum age: 18 years
  • Included classes: A1, AM

Driving license class A

  • vehicles: Motorcycles over 50 cm³ or more than 45 km/h, three-wheeled motor vehicles (over 15 kW)
  • Minimum age: 24 years (direct entry), 20 years (at least 2 years of A2 possession)
  • Included classes: A2, A1, A2S

Driving license class B

  • vehicles: Motor vehicles up to 3,500 kg, max. 8 persons excluding driver, trailer up to 750 kg
  • Minimum age: 18 years, 17 years (supervised driving)
  • Included classes: AM, L

Driving license class B96

  • vehicles: Vehicle combinations (class B towing vehicle and trailer), total mass 3,500 kg to 4,250 kg
  • Minimum age: 18 years, 17 years (supervised driving)
  • Previous ownership: Driving license class B required
  • Included classes: No

Driving license class BE

  • vehicles: Combinations of class B towing vehicle and trailer (up to 3,500 kg)
  • Minimum age: 18 years, 17 years (supervised driving)
  • Previous ownership: Driving license class B required
  • Included classes: No

Driving license class C1

  • vehicles: Motor vehicles (3,500 kg to 7,500 kg, max. 8 persons excluding driver), trailers up to 750 kg
  • Minimum age: 18 years
  • Previous ownership: Driving license class B required
  • Included classes: No

Driving license class C1E

  • vehicles: Combinations of class C1 towing vehicle and trailer (total mass max. 12,000 kg)
  • Minimum age: 18 years
  • Previous ownership: Driving license class C1 required
  • Included classes: BE, D1E (if authorized to drive class D1)

Driving license class C

  • vehicles: Motor vehicles over 3,500 kg, max. 8 persons excluding driver, trailer up to 750 kg
  • Minimum age: 21 years
  • Previous ownership: Driving license class B required
  • Included classes: C1

Driving license class CE

  • vehicles: Combinations of class C towing vehicle and trailer (over 750 kg)
  • Minimum age: 21 years
  • Previous ownership: Driving license class C required
  • Included classes: BE, C1E, T, DE (if authorized to drive class D)

Driving license class D1

  • vehicles: Motor vehicles for the transport of max. 16 persons excluding driver, length max. 8 m, trailer up to 750 kg
  • Minimum age: 21 years
  • Previous ownership: Driving license class B required
  • Included classes: No

Driving license class D1E

  • vehicles: Combinations of a towing vehicle of class D1 and a trailer (over 750 kg)
  • Minimum age: 21 years
  • Previous ownership: Driving license class D1 required
  • Included classes: BE

Driving license class D

  • vehicles: Motor vehicles for the transport of more than 8 persons in addition to the driver, trailers up to 750 kg
  • Minimum age: 24 years
  • Previous ownership: Driving license class B required
  • Included classes: D1

Driving license class DE

  • vehicles: Combinations of class D towing vehicle and trailer (over 750 kg)
  • Minimum age: 24 years
  • Previous ownership: Driving license class D required

Driving license class T

  • vehicles: tractors (max. 60 km/h) and self-propelled machines (max. 40 km/h), trailers
  • Minimum age: 16 years (40 km/h), 18 years (60 km/h)

Driving license class L

  • vehicles: Tractors (max. 40 km/h) for agricultural or forestry purposes, trailers up to 25 km/h
  • Minimum age: 16 years
  • Included classes: No
